If you are trying to rehome a pet consider these options

Austin Humane Society

Contact the No Kill Austin Humane Society at 837-7985 or receiving@austinhumanesociety.org and ask about their availability to take in your cat. The Austin Humane Society takes in only owned animals — not strays. If they are unable to take your cat, ask if there is a waiting list you can be added to.

Please remember this is a non profit organization that relies soley on your donations. Please expect to leave one.

Austin Pets Alive

Contact the Austin Pets Alive! newsletter, The Handbill. This is an online newsletter with a readership of over 1000 people — many in Rescue. Write a narrative of your situation, send it to handbill@hotmail.com and it will usually be posted that evening or the next. You can also subscribe to the Handbill at this address.

Placing an Ad

If you place an ad in the paper or in some of the local lists that abound, please remember to always screen adopters. "Free to good home" ads often attract the wrong kind of people and many animals end up as snake food, dog bait or in research labs. Always ask for an adoption fee. You may think the person looking at your pet looks and sounds very nice, but that is the job of a con-man — to deceive you. ASK and QUESTION! Your pet surely deserves this much.

Breed Rescue Groups

There are numerous breed rescue groups. If your cat is a specific breed, you might try one of these organizations. Most can be found by searching through www.goodsearch.com (don't forget to add Shadow Cats as your charity of choice!)

For non breed cats, there are many organizations locally that may be able to assist you. For a list of those organizations, see below.

Lastly, all the Humane and Rescue organizations in this town cannot fully address the pet needs of this city. It is up to each of us to take responsibility for the animals that cross our paths. If you find a cat, consider giving it a home. It's really the humane thing to do. By opening your heart and home to an animal, you are making space for a cat in a shelter to find a home too. Open your heart just a little.
