I’ve had this cat for years, now I’m (or my husband, child, housekeeper, significant other, parent) is allergic, and I need to find a new home.
Can you take my cat?

We do not take cats in from the public (our mission is the trapping, sterilizing and releasing of free-roaming cats) we can give you information and resources to help you find a solution.

Allergies can be effectively dealt with by a regimen of allergy shots for the allergic person. Keeping the cats out of your bedrooms will also help. Your vet may be able to recommend a groomer and/ or a product that when used as directed can greatly reduce allergens. There are also air purifiers on the market, which can aid in the removing of allergens indoors.

Remember this cat has been a part of your family, and trusts you to take care of him/her.

Adult cats are very difficult to re-home. There are many cute little kittens languishing in shelters.

If you absolutely need to re-home your pet, contact the Austin Humane Society (837-7985) or email at receiving@austinhumanesociety.org. They do not usually take cats over the age of 7, or adult cats during kitten season. You may be placed on a waiting list. You should expect to make a donation.

If you have cats of a specific breed, such as Maine Coon or Siamese, check out local rescues at
www.austinrescue.com.

Ask friends and neighbors if they can help you. Contact your veterinarian. You may be able to put up a flyer.  Please remember to ask for a donation and screen applicants so your cat gets a good home.

You can place an ad in your local paper or on Craig's list or the Handbill online at
handbill@hotmail.com. Ask for an adoption fee to prevent your pet from becoming a research subject, dog bait, or worse. Unfortunately we know there are some unsavory people out there who would harm these innocent animals.

Consider other local shelters, such as the Central Texas SPCA; but ask if they are a "No Kill" shelter; most "kill" shelters destroy over 50% of the pets they take in.

Contact Austin Pets Alive! and their Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) for more info.

The P.A.S.S. Program was created to help people help their pets to find new homes or to stay in their current homes. Austin Pets Alive! works together with you to determine and implement the best solution for you and your pet. They offer advice and assistance with solving behavioral or medical issues, and limited assistance with rehoming your pet. If you had a question about a dog you adopted or want to adopt, email adopt@austinpetsalive.org or call (512) 961-6519. The P.A.S.S. program is staffed solely by dedicated volunteers. We are committed to assisting you, but resources are limited.

Thank you for caring about these cats and good luck finding them a safe home!
