Cathy's Closet

When you're a well known politician you get your portrait hung up in a government building. A famous soldier may be immortalized with a big statue in a park or monument. At the Shadow Cats sanctuary we're not quite that fancy.....but if you're really special you might get a room named after you! We haven't done that often - Cookie's Place and Nana's Corner have been the only two up until now. But we realized that we had the perfect room to name after a very special friend, and so we've just christened Cathy's Closet.

There's a small closet in the hall right across from Cookie's Place that we use to store all the food for our sanctuary kitties. And until last year, it seemed to run low - especially on canned food - much of the time. And then one day a longtime friend and supporter made what seemed, at the time, like a simple little suggestion - why not start an Amazon.com wishlist for Shadow Cats so that people everywhere could send food directly to our kitties? We had never thought of this, but it seemed like a terrific idea so we did just that. To our amazement, packages began to show up on our doorstep and the food closet began to fill up. There's something about sending food that people really seem to like - and with Amazon they can often send it for the same price or less than we'd have to pay to buy it locally.

Over the past few months we've grown to really depend on those Amazon boxes, and they just keep coming. And while they come from people all over, we also noticed that quite a few of them seemed to have a note inside letting us know that they were from Cathy. She lives in another state, but came to know Shadow Cats in 2007 through her participation in the Great Kitty Rescue in Pahrump, Nevada that resulted in 17 FeLV cats coming to live at our sanctuary in Cookie's Place. Cathy has not only followed the progress of those kitties closely, but she's come to Texas to visit us several times and has become a dear friend.

Lately it's seemed like every time we open the door to that closet to stack up a few new boxes that just arrived, or to take out a case of food for the daily wet feeding, we think of Cathy - so it only seemed fitting that her name should be on the door, and now it is. It's not a grand portrait or a fancy statue, but it's just about the highest honor we can bestow on a member of the Shadow Cats family. So from all of us who care for the kitties, Cathy, a big thank you for all that you do! And from all of the sanctuary cats, your favorite felines.......a big YUM!
