Weston’s life took a wrong turn at some point
during his first two years. All we know is that
in 2011 he turned up at Austin’s Town Lake
Animal Center and tested positive for feline
leukemia. That diagnosis leaves a cat with
almost no hope of adoption, and few shelters
anywhere provide lifetime care to FeLV+ cats.
Our sanctuary was
full, but another shelter in Oregon heard about
Weston and offered to take him in. But Weston came down with several
illnesses and wasn’t able to travel, and weeks
dragged on into months. When he had been nursed
back to full health at Central Texas Cat
Hospital, we brought him to our sanctuary to let
him have a little room to roam while travel
arrangements could be made.
But problems kept coming up getting airline
reservations, and we finally decided that Weston
had been through enough upheaval in his life and
deserved to just stay settled into Cookie’s
Place where he seemed to fit right in with the
other cats. He had charmed our volunteers too,
so everyone was happy to find out that Weston would become
a permanent
resident with us.
Weston has a
nurturing side too, he really loves to groom the
younger cats in Cookie's Place. He can be
very insistent about it - he'll sometimes be
pretty forceful about holding down someone for
one of his "spa treatments". Life at the
sanctuary seems to agree with him...maybe a
little too much, as he's filled out quite a bit
and now weighs in at over sixteen pounds! Watch for Weston on the Kitty Cam
- he may be on the couch, or a
volunteer's lap, or on the windowsill watching
the bird feeder…but wherever he is, he’ll be one
happy – and lucky – cat. |
