We
met Captain Jack on our visit from England and
were thrilled to rub his head and hear him purr
while we gave him treats. Our grandsons watch
the KittyCam with us, and Captain Jack is our
favorite Shadow Cat! ~The Sinclair Family~

Captain Jack
Born 7/20/03
Surely you’ve seen the famous black velvet print
of “Dogs Playing Poker”. Well, it’s a
little-known fact that cats are actually much
better poker players than dogs (most dogs start
drooling when they get a good hand). Late at
night, when no one’s around, the cards come out
at the sanctuary. And when it’s Captain Jack’s
turn to deal, everyone knows what the game will
be... "One-eyed Jacks are wild”, of course!
This
one-eyed Jack isn’t wild any more, though. He
had been living well at a local feral colony.
But then one day he showed up with a badly
injured eye, and at the vet’s office they also
found that he now had both feline leukemia and
FIV. Shadow Cats stepped in and opened their
arms and hearts to him. Hardly any place will
take on a cat with all those problems, and of
course we don’t have room to take them all. But
for the lucky ones like Captain Jack, life gets
a whole lot better. He lived in Cookie’s Place
for several years, but when several other strong
young male cats joined us, he started fighting
with them to assert his authority. The fights
got worse, so now he stays in his own private
section of the Outback. He can still see his
pals through the fence, and gets along fine with
everyone at a distance. And, of course, he’s
still the reigning poker champ. ;o)
