Stewart, brothers
Martin and Parker, and mom Tango were trapped when they
were strays in the sanctuary neighborhood ten
years ago. Instead of wandering by and looking
wistfully into the Outback enclosure at all the
cats who seemed to have it made – plenty of
food, cozy beds, all kinds of neat things to
climb on – Stewart and his family got to live on the inside.
Stewart was hard
to categorize. He was fairly skittish and tended to
keep to himself, hanging out on the high shelves
or out of sight back under the porch. However, unlike truly feral cats Stewart really seemed
to like people. With a little coaxing and TLC
he’d sometimes warm up to you
and let you pet him, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
When our volunteers did the daily wet feeding,
Stewart was always the first one to run out and then
dashed from plate to plate to sample a bite from
each one.
Today our
volunteers noticed that Stewart was clearly not
himself. We rushed him to the hospital,
but sadly they found several very serious
problems that he could not overcome. He
passed peacefully, without pain, and surrounded
by loving hands. Stewart won't be there
for the wet feeding any more...but in the days
ahead we'll always imagine him looking down on
us, licking his lips, and watching for the next
plate.
