One of the most endearing things
about Blossom is her complete and utter air of
innocence. All of our other cats are “rescue
cats” in some way, and all of them spent at
least some time having to fend for themselves in
a tough world. And though they all became very
comfortably domesticated and socialized, they
never completely lost that need to always be
somewhat on guard, alert for the possibility of
danger, ready to jump at a second’s notice. It
was a necessary survival skill for them at one
time in their lives.
Blossom, on the other hand, was rescued from
that life when she was only weeks old and still
under the care of her mother, so she never
developed that wariness. It’s a real joy to see
her wander around the house and suddenly, on a
whim, just flop down wherever she is and roll
around without a care in the world. She has no
fear of anything (well, except perhaps the
squirt bottle), and in a safe and loving
environment now she’ll never need to develop
any. She’s just a little bundle of happy
innocence, although it would be nice if she were
just a bit less trusting of us---she doesn’t
realize that a black kitty stretched out on a
step halfway up a dark staircase can be hard for
us to see, and we’ve taken more than one spill
trying desperately to avoid stepping on her.
