Titus

Titus Adronicus looked around him when his eyes opened after his first week of life and was amazed at how big everything was.  He curled up close to his mother, trying to forget about the constant biting from the fleas that were devouring him.  The days and weeks passed, but instead of growing healthy and strong, little Titus seemed to grow weaker.  However, he fought to survive and refused to give in - despite the odds.  He developed an eye infection which made it difficult to keep them open or to see.  His ears had visible parasites - oh my how he scratched!

Finally, the day came when his mom was no longer there.  He ventured out into the light on tiny legs - all of about six weeks old.

Surely life would have ended for him there very quickly. Death from starvation or predators was fairly assured. But good fortune would soon shine on this little kitten with the big name.

He had no idea that Shadow Cats’ trapper, Dawn, lurked close by.  He had no idea that in addition to the predators lying in wait, was his guardian angel watching over him and all of the cats.

Dawn had been working in this area for months, trapping and sterilizing everything in sight. Diligently working through area after area, she painstakingly set her traps for all the cats.  When she saw tiny Titus, she knew other means of capturing this little one-pound-wonder would need to be used.  Deftly pulling him into the snare of her net, she had him before he knew what happened.  His life changed in that instant.

Arriving to the veterinary clinic, he was immediately cleaned, bathed, treated and medicated.  He put up a bit of a fuss - all of five minutes!  After that he seemed to know he was outnumbered and he gave in to being cared for.  After he was warm and dry, he sweetly received all the TLC we could give him.

Sadly, several weeks later we found Titus had leukemia. With confirmatory tests showing he was indeed positive for leukemia, he did not enter our adoption program, but rather became a resident of Cookie’s Place.

While he is still very tiny - nine weeks old in June 2009 - he is very much living up to his name!  He plays hard, tackles the big kitties and doesn’t seem to realize just how much of a size difference there is!   He DID learn when he met Polly and Lacey that there are some too tough for even him to handle!

For this little boy, he will have a life of knowing a warm bed, a fully tummy and what being safe feels like.  How can that be anything but a success?
