We all like to think we’re extra special…Melvin really is!  Not just because he looks like a prince here on his throne, either.  Melvin has six toes.  Now, there’s a fancy technical term for that, but also a much more interesting legend.  Ernest Hemingway was known for his love of six toed cats, starting with one that a ship captain gave to him.  Legend has it that all six toed cats in the United States are descendents of Hemingway’s original colony which still thrives in Key West, Florida.  So would you rather be known as a polydactyl, or a Hemingway Cat?  Melvin prefers the legend!

Melvin lives in the Uptown suite at the sanctuary.  His extra toes give him great big feet which you’ll notice right away, but he also has a strikingly handsome coat.  He may not seem cuddly at first, but after he gets to know you he’ll head for your lap whenever he gets the chance.  Melvin is part of the “lucky bunch” – he was rescued from rural south Texas along with Luke, Davey, and several others.
